Project 1: Tourism Together

Context

when? where? who? why?

The idea is to create an application which tourists visiting Phillippines could use to be informed of volunteer missions. These missions are specifically centered around waste management and pollution pick up. The idea is that because tourism has led to the degradation of natural resources, and some may feel responsible for the clean-up of the spaces that they've visited.

Target

for whom?

Tourists who come to the Philippines who are interested in spending a day volunteering with the local community to help with trash clean up. In 2018, the Philippines had to close one of their most popular islands, Boracay, for concentrated clean-up efforts in order to maintain the tourism indsutry. Tourism on this island maintains 36,000 jobs in the hospitality industry, and closing the island for a period of time was harmful to the people who rely on those jobs. By encouraging tourists to volunteer a little bit of their time, entire destinations do not need to close completely, saving local jobs.

Service offered

what? how?

Local companies in the Philippines can post clean-up events on the app to alert tourists that these efforts are happening. The tourists can then register for the day that they want to go, and trasnportation can be arranged for the group to travel together. This allows tourists to see a new site that they may not have had the chance to visit, while still giving their time and energy.

Project 2: Tourism Forever

Context

when? where? who? why?

Forecasting passenger traffic is a fundamental task for tourism departments around the world. But traffic can change depending on a variety of factors, making it even more difficult for authorities to predict exactly what visitors will want to do when they come here. This makes it more difficult to allocate resources optimally.

Target

for whom?

The goal of this application is to obtain information that will help the agencies concerned to get the number of upcoming visitors and where these visitors want to go. The application provides travel advice and travel information to tourists at the same time.

Service offered

what? how?

The app will work with local tourism authorities and will ask visitors to upload information about their travels and what attractions they plan to visit. After uploading their travel information, visitors will be able to get professional information about the weather conditions during the time they plan to travel, the opening of attractions, recommended restaurants, etc. The app will work with local tourism authorities.
